Miscellaneous Sonic Music Info

This section is devoted to random bits of information and trivia concerning the music from the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games. Here you'll find a comprehensive list of songs that have been used and reused between different Sonic games as well as information on music that went unused for one reason or another.

Reused Songs

Throughout the history of the Sonic games, quite a large number of songs and themes have been reused in full or in part. The purpose of the following list is to compile a glossary of sorts to catalogue each occurrence of a recycled song from one Sonic title to another.

[001] Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1: SEGA Genesis) -- Green Hill Zone (Sonic 1: SEGA GameGear) -- Green Hill (Sonic Adventure 2) -- Arena: Green Hill (Sonic Battle) -- Zone2 Map: Sunset Hill, Zone2 Act 1: Sunset Hill, Zone2 Act2: Sunset Hill, Zone2 Act3: Sunset Hill (Sonic Advance 3)
Perhaps one of the most recognizable Sonic songs of all time, the theme of Green Hill Zone has been reused and remixed quite a few times since it was first composed and heard back in 1991. There really isn't much to explain with this entry as each iteration has kept fairly close to the original, making the similarities incredibly obvious.
[002] 2P Mystic Cave Zone (Sonic 2: SEGA Genesis) -- Red Mountain: Type 1 (Sonic Adventure)
Only a small portion of "2P Mystic Cave Zone" was used in "Red Mountain: Type 1." Listen to the main melody played on the piano about forty seconds into "Red Mountain: Type 1." You should recognize it as part of the melody that starts about twenty seconds into "2P Mystic Cave Zone."
[003] Sonic - You Can Do Anything (Sonic CD: SEGA Mega-CD) -- Green Hills Zone (Sonic 2: SEGA GameGear) -- Mecha Green Hill Zone (Sonic Chaos: SEGA GameGear) -- Invincible (Sonic Drift) -- Invincible (Sonic Adventure) -- Invincible (Sonic Adventure 2: The Trial) -- Invincible (Sonic Adventure 2)
The first two songs in this entry have the most in common. The melody of Sonic 2's "Green Hills Zone" matches up exactly with the lyrics of Sonic CD's "Sonic - You Can Do Anything." Once we get to "Mecha Green Hill Zone," however, we take a turn towards more of a remix, this song taking a lot of inspiration from "Green Hills Zone." Up next we've got "Invincible" from Sonic Drift. The melody of this song follows along with the refrain of "Sonic - You Can Do Anything." ("Toot toot Sonic Warrior, deep in space and time ... 'cause if you try, you can do anything.") And finally, the "Invincible" jingles from the Adventure series. These songs have the least in common with the original, but still hold one resemblance to it. The chime part sounds very much like the lyrics "toot toot Sonic Warrior."
[004] Green Grove Zone Act 1 (Sonic 3D Blast: SEGA Genesis) -- Windy Valley: The Air (Sonic Adventure)
This one's pretty straightforward. About the only additions made between the original song and it's Adventure iteration are in the way of a background rhythm guitar and in the drum track where you can hear some added cymbals. Everything else that changed about the song falls under the instrumentation category.
[005] Panic Puppet Zone Act 1 (Sonic 3D Blast: SEGA Genesis) -- Twinkle Park: Twinkle Park (Sonic Adventure)
Aside from instrumentation and synth properties, the differences between the original version of this song and it's Sonic Adventure reincarnation are almost null. The one addition you might notice right off, though, is that of some new percussion to "Twinkle Park: Twinkle Park."

When it was used once again for Sonic Pocket Adventure, however, the original theme underwent a number of changes in instrumentation and was also transposed up a few notes.

[094] Dialogue: Dr. Robotnik (Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine: SEGA Genesis) -- Game Select (Sonic Classics)
There isn't much to this one. The BGM for the pre-match cutscene with Dr. Robotnik in Mean Bean Machine was reused for the game select screen for Sonic Classics. An odd choice, I think, but it works.
[095] Event #01 (Sonic Adventure 2) -- Theme of Sonic (Sonic Adventure 2)
The brass section of "Event #01" follows along with the refrain of "Theme of Sonic." "It doesn't matter now what happens, I will never give up the fight," etc.

Unused Songs

The following list compiles a number of songs from various Sonic games that were, for one reason or another, not used in the final version of the game.

[001] BGM#10 (Sonic 2: SEGA Genesis)
I think I can say this song has become one of the most popular unused songs from any Sonic game. From what is known about it, this BGM was supposed to be used for Hidden Palace Zone, which was cut from the final version of Sonic 2.
[002] BGM#09BH (Sonic Chaos: SEGA GameGear)
While not used in Sonic Chaos, an improved, more refined version of this song made it into the game's sequel, Sonic Triple Trouble, as Sunset Park Zone Act 3. It really makes you wonder, though, what this song's original intended use was supposed to be.
[003] Extend (Sonic Adventure), 1UP (Sonic Adventure 2)
This fanfare, though listed in each game's sound test, from what I've been able to tell was never actually used in-game. Instead, you hear the Chaos Emerald fanfare when you gain an extra life.
[004] Title: Station Square (Sonic Adventure)
I figure this song was supposed to be used on the loading screen for when you enter Station Square. That screen, however, remained silent in the final version of the game while this song was left behind in the sound test.
[005] Title: Mystic Ruin (Sonic Adventure)
As the name implies, one would figure this song would've been used as BGM for the loading screen for Mystic Ruin. As with the previous entry, however, said loading screen remained silent.
[006] Title: M. Ruin ~the Past~ (Sonic Adventure)
Nothing special here. This song probably would've served the same purpose as the previous one, except it would've been exclusive to the past version of Mystic Ruin.
[007] Title: Egg Carrier (Sonic Adventure)
Some people believe that this song -- if you can actually call it that, as it's mostly sound effects -- was used in-game for the transformation sequence of the Egg Carrier. After looking into it quite extensively, however, I can assure you that it's not. A similar series of sound effects is used when the Egg Carrier transforms, but this specific series is not. Besides, there had to be a good reason for this and the previous three entries to be removed from the sound test of Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the GameCube re-release of Sonic Adventure: they weren't used in-game.
[008] BIG: Miss! (Sonic Adventure)
One would figure this song would play when your line snaps while playing through Big's game in Sonic Adventure. For some reason, however, it doesn't.
