Miscellaneous SonicTeam Music Info
This section compiles various bits of information and trivia concerning the music from the Phantasy Star game series. Though it may not be nearly as extensive as the Misc. Sonic Music Info section, rest assured that as more facts about the Phantasy Star soundtracks are dug up, they will be added here.
Reused Songs
Though it may not have as extensive a history of reused and remixed songs as the Sonic series, the Phantasy Star games were not left out when it came to paying homage to their predecessors through their soundtracks. Some familiar songs from PSO, you may notice, have their roots in the soundtracks of the Phantasy Star titles from the days of the Master System and SEGA Genesis, while others have been altered and remixed from one chapter of the Phantasy Star Online saga to the next. The following list compiles all known instances of such.
- [001] Dungeon 2 (Phantasy Star), Secret Ways, Silent Zone, Rise or Fall (Phantasy Star II) -- Versus1 -Tricktrack- (Phantasy Star Online Ver.2) -- Tricktrack PART2 (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II)
- --
- [002] Dungeon 1 (Phantasy Star) -- Versus2 -A longing to ancient times- (Phantasy Star Online Ver.2) -- A longing to ancient times PART2 (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II)
- Paying homage to the original Phantasy Star's dungeon theme, "Versus2 -A longing to ancient times-" from PSO Ver.2 borrows the melody of "Dungeon 1" from about 01:34 to 01:45 as the lead string section, then continuing on in the background until about 01:58. This was of course reused in "A longing to ancient times PART2," the enemy encounters theme for the VR temple in PSO Ep.I&II. It's placement, however, is slightly different. The lead section runs from about 01:22 until 01:33, then continues in the background until 01:45.
- [003] OPENING THEME -The whole new world- (Phantasy Star Online) -- The whole new world -EPISODE2- (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II) -- The whole new world -EPISODE2- (Phantasy Star Online ep.III) -- The whole new world (Sonic Pinball Party) -- Meteor Strike! (Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst Ep.IV)
- --
- [004] Jungle -A lush load-, Jungle -A forest cage- (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II) -- Nebula Montana PART1, Nebula Montana PART2 (Phantasy Star Online ep.III)
- --
- [005] Mother earth of dishonesty PART2 (Phantasy Star Online) -- Lupus Silva PART1, Lupus Silva PART2 (Phantasy Star Online ep.III) -- Forest of Deja Vu (Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus)
- The similarities between "Mother earth of dishonesty PART2" and "Lupus Silva PART2" are pretty obvious, as the latter of the two songs is simply an orchestral arrangement of the first. As for "Lupus Silva PART1," you might have to listen a little harder to notice the similarities. Listen to the lead of "Lupus Silva PART1" -- the strings that begin playing moments after the drum and low string intro. This section was derived from the high string section of "Mother earth of dishonesty PART2" that begins about 39 seconds into the song. The tempo has of course been reduced in the remixed version of the song, but the notes and rhythms remain more or less the same. Finally, that brings us to the version of this song heard in PSU: Ambition of the Illuminus. It's actually not a remix or arrangement of it at all, but the exact same song as it originally premiered in PSO.
- [006] Violation (Phantasy Star II) -- Tricktrack PART1 (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II)
- --
- [007] Power (Phantasy Star II) -- A longing to ancient times PART1 (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II)
- --
- [008] Main Theme (Phantasy Star III) -- Nostalgia in Solitude -PART1- (Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst Ep.IV)
- You can hear the melody of Phantasy Star III's "Main Theme" beautifully mixed into Ep.IV's "Nostalgia in Solitude -PART1-" starting around 02:13 and running until about 02:37.
- [009] Dark Force, City of Darkness (Phantasy Star III) -- Nostalgia in Solitude -PART2- (Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst Ep.IV)
- The opening section of "Nostalgia in Solitude -PART2-" was actually inspired by Phantasy Star III's "Dark Force." A few rhythms were slightly altered to better suit the faster tempo of "Nostalgia," but the notes remain the same between both songs. This then leads into a recurring piano section which was derived from the main melody of Phantasy Star III's "City of Darkness."
- [010] World with me -EPISODE2 ENDING THEME- (Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II) -- World with me -remix for pso bb- (Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst Ep.IV)
- Making the transition between Ep.II and Ep.IV, the lyrics of "World with me," sans tempo, basically remained unchanged. The rest of the song, however, went from being a slow ballad to a much more upbeat and dancy song.
- [011] Can still see the light -ENDING THEME- (Phantasy Star Online) -- Can still see the light (Sonic Pinball Party)
- There's not really much that needs to be said about this one. Simply put, the second half of the ending theme of Phantasy Star Online was reused as BGM for one of the pinball tables in Sonic Pinball Party.
- [012] Image of hero (Phantasy Star Online) -- Image of hero (Phantasy Star Online ep.III)
- There's not much to this one. The character creation theme from the original PSO was simply reused for the same purpose in ep.III (as well as Ep.I&II and Ep.IV).
- [013] Save This World (Phantasy Star Universe) -- Choose To Fight (Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus)
- For the most part, the lyrics between these two songs are pretty different; they do share a few similar verses, however. Also, the basic vocal melody for the shared lyrics match pretty well between both songs.
Footnotes: The soundtracks for Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Online Ep.I&II, and Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst Ep.IV in this list are handled a little differently from the others. Since Ep.I&II and Ep.IV aren't true sequels to the original PSO -- they are more along the lines of expansions for the game -- the songs that were reused among those titles ("A song for eternal story," "From seeing the rough wave," "Revolution to the origin PART2," etc., for example) will not be listed, as that would be quite redundant. As for songs from one of those three titles which are reused in any other Phantasy Star game, only the first PSO title the song appeared in will be listed as the source. (Entries 001 and 002, for example.) Phantasy Star Online ep.III, on the other hand, is handled as a true sequel to the series, so these rules do not apply to it.
